Tillsonburg History
In 1825, George Tillson, a Massachusetts native, made a prospecting tour from Normandale on Lake Erie in search of iron ore. Tillson settled on the future site of Tillsonburg, led to this spot by the Otter River winding its way through the dense forests of oak, pine, ash and black cherry. He purchased six hundred acres in the Township of Derham.
In 1836 the settlement was surveyed and the name Dereham Forge changed to Tillsonburg. Another milestone in the community's history was its incorporation as a town in 1872. when E.D. Tillson became the first Mayor.
In the early twenties the town's business was given an incredible impetus by the advent of flue-cured tobacco as a crop. The birth of the tobacco industry produced a rapid growth in the town and an increase in wealth. Always a sporting town since the earliest days of the Pan-Dried hockey and baseball teams, Tillsonburg reached its sports zenith in 1952 when the mens basketball team, sponsored by Gerry Livingston, won the Canadian Senior Championship and the right to represent Canada at the summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.
Location Tillsonburg is located in Southwestern Ontario, Canada in the southern end of the County of Oxford. Tillsonburg is bounded on the east by the Region of Haldimand-Norfolk and on the west by Elgin County.
